2nd position

Main principles
-
The same principles as in other (non-extension) positions apply
-
2nd position has two variations - half tone higher than 1st position or full tone higher than 1st position. Always be very clear about which variation you use
A minor scale (melodic)
To play A minor melodic scale you will have to use the 2nd position. It will be full tone higher than the 1st position. We slide to it with the 1st finger and come back again with the same finger.
Here is the sheet music of A minor scale.
E minor scale (melodic)
Use the same finger pattern as for the previous scale.
Here is the sheet music of E minor.
Dotzauer no. 146
In this piece you use the 2nd position, half tone higher than the 1st position.
When you feel confident about the 2nd position, work on the even changes between the strings. Also add the dynamics and articulation that is indicated in the score.
Here is the sheet music of Dotzauer no. 146.
The second position is always a little tricky because it is in between the known 1st position and still before the secure 4th position. Always make sure to check the intonation with open strings (that will be notes A, D, G and C) and place other notes accordingly.
We continue our journey with the 3rd position.
